拉丁词根(三十六):真、证、试与信
一、ver:真
拉丁词根 ver- 来自形容词 vērus(真的)。本义「真实」,引申为「核实、真相、裁决」等。
ver- “true”
- verify /ˈverɪfaɪ/ ver- + -ify,使成真(核实)→ 证实、核对。例: Please verify your email address.
- verity /ˈverəti/ ver- + -ity,真的(状态)→ 真理、事实。例: He spoke with verity.
- veracious /vəˈreɪʃəs/ ver- + -acious,说真话的 → 诚实的、真实的。例: She is a veracious reporter.
- veracity /vəˈræsəti/ ver- + -acity,真实性 → 诚实、准确。例: The veracity of the report was questioned.
- verdict /ˈvɜːdɪkt/ ver- + dict(说),说出的真(结论)→ 裁决、定论。例: The jury reached a verdict of guilty.
- verisimilitude /ˌverɪsɪˈmɪlɪtjuːd/ veri-(真)+ simil-(像)+ -itude,像真的(程度)→ 逼真、貌似真实。例: The novel has a certain verisimilitude.
- aver /əˈvɜː/ a-(ad-, to)+ ver,向真(断言)→ 断言、声称。例: He averred that he had never seen her.
二、test:证、见
拉丁词根 test- 来自名词 testis(证人)。本义「见证、作证」,引申为「证词、遗嘱、考验、反对」等。
test- “witness, testify”
- testify /ˈtestɪfaɪ/ test- + -ify,做证人 → 作证、证明。例: She agreed to testify in court.
- testimony /ˈtestɪməni/ test- + -mony,证人的(陈述)→ 证词、证明。例: His testimony was crucial to the case.
- testament /ˈtestəmənt/ test- + -ament,见证(的文书)→ 遗嘱;证明(如 New Testament)。例: The will was a testament to his wishes.
- attest /əˈtest/ at-(ad-, to)+ test,向…作证 → 证明、证实。例: The document attests to the agreement.
- contest /kənˈtest/ con-( together)+ test,一起作证(争)→ 争夺、竞赛;争辩。例: He decided to contest the result.
- detest /dɪˈtest/ de-( away)+ test,作证反对(诅咒)→ 憎恶。(一说来自 detestārī 发誓远离。)例: She detests violence.

三、prob:试、证
拉丁词根 prob- 来自形容词 probus(好的、可靠的)和动词 probāre(检验、证明)。本义「检验、证明」,引申为「可能、赞成、改进」等。
prob- “prove, test, good”
- probable /ˈprɒbəbl/ prob- + -able,可被证明的(可能成立)→ 很可能发生的。例: It is probable that she will agree.
- prove /pruːv/ prob- 变体 → 证明、验证。例: The experiment proved the theory.
- proof /pruːf/ prob- 变体,被证明的(证据)→ 证据、校样。例: There was no proof of his guilt.
- approve /əˈpruːv/ ap-(ad-, to)+ prov-(prob-),证明为佳 → 赞成、批准。例: The committee approved the plan.
- reprove /rɪˈpruːv/ re-( back)+ prov-,证明(为不好)→ 责备、指责。例: She reproved him for being late.

四、fid:信(巩固)
拉丁词根 fid- 来自名词 fidēs(信任、忠诚)。第三十章已讲「信」,此处巩固:confide、confident、fidelity、perfidy、affidavit 等。

- confide /kənˈfaɪd/ con-( with)+ fid- + -e,以信任相待 → 吐露、委托。例: She confided her secret to him.
- confident /ˈkɒnfɪdənt/ con- + fid- + -ent,充满信任(的)→ 自信的。例: He was confident of success.
- fidelity /fɪˈdeləti/ fid- + -el- + -ity,守信(的状态)→ 忠诚;保真度。例: Fidelity is important in marriage.
- infidel /ˈɪnfɪdl/ in-( not)+ fid- + -el,不信(的)→ 不信教者、异教徒。例: The term infidel is now rarely used.
- perfidy /ˈpɜːfɪdi/ per-( away)+ fid- + -y,背弃信任 → 背信弃义。例: His perfidy shocked everyone.
- affidavit /ˌæfɪˈdeɪvɪt/ af-(ad-)+ fid- + -avit(他已发誓),已宣誓(的陈述)→ 宣誓书。例: He signed an affidavit.
- diffident /ˈdɪfɪdənt/ dif-(dis-, apart)+ fid- + -ent,缺乏信任(对自己)→ 缺乏自信的、羞怯的。例: She was diffident about speaking in public.
verify vs testify
Verify(证实、核对):让某事「成真」或确认其真实,偏重检查、核实,如 verify the facts. Testify(作证、证明):以「证人」身份说出所见所闻,偏重在法庭或正式场合陈述,如 testify in court. 记:verify = 核实真假;testify = 出面作证。
